This tart may look like a lot of work but it is super easy and perfect to make with kids. And even better is that it is so delicious and full of apple goodness. The only prerequisite of course is that you like apples!easy apple tart | conifères & feuillus

You can prepare the tart shell ahead of time but making the applesauce and assembling the tart is perfect for involving the little people in your lives.

Easy Apple Tart

Pastry Crust (slightly adapted from here)

(Makes crust to fill a tart pan 9 inches in diameter)

  • 200 g white whole wheat flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 124 g cold butter, plus extra for greasing the tart tins
  • 1 tbsp unrefined cane sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2-5 tsp water
  1. Lightly butter the tart tin.
  2. Mix flour and sugar together. Rub in the butter with your fingertips. Add the egg yolk. Start by adding 2 tsp of water and mix to form a dough. Add additional water as required to get a firm dough that can be shaped into a ball.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a circle that is slightly larger than the tart pan. Press onto the base of the pan and up the sides. If it tears while doing this, no problem, just patch it up. With a knife, trim off the pastry to have a neat edge along the top. Prick the base of each tin with a fork and chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. In the meantime, preheat oven to 375°F.
  4. Line the pan with parchment paper and fill with baking beans. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove the paper and the beans and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the pastry just begins to brown at the edges. Let cool completely. In the meantime, prepare the filling.

Apple Tart (adapted from here)

  • pastry crust for a 9 inch tart pan
  • 150 g – 300 g  applesauce
  • about 3 apples, such as Gala, Empire, Honeycrisp, peeled and cored and sliced 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp muscovado
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread apple sauce evenly over the pastry, as much or as little as you like.
  3. Layer the apple slices, randomly or, as I have done in two circles, slightly overlapping. Sprinkle over with muscovado and brush with butter.
  4. Bake for 25-45 minutes, until the apples are soft and lightly browned. (The amount of baking time you will need depends on the type of apples you are using as well as the thickness you have cut them to.) Enjoy!

  1. Thank you. Normally, when I have my 3 year old helping me, it doesn’t look that way, but this time, we tried particularly hard to keep things neat for photos!
