A few weeks ago, we had a terrible wind storm here. The next day, I sent husband out with the cargo bike to pick up the fallen branches so I may give them a second new life before they disintegrate back to where they came from. : This morning, I came across this beautiful post from Katherine, copied here, word for word as I couldn’t have written it any better. It sums up how I feel perfectly: “I‘ve always thought of compost as a top down thing. I’ve looked at the disintegration, the breaking down that happens so obviously from my view. The rotting piles of food in my bin. The crushed leaves under my feet. I’ve seen it for what it is. Life to death: a simple process. Go back to its root: ‘compost’ comes from late Middle English, and before that from Old French composte, and before that from Latin composita: ‘something put together.’ Something put together. Decay, back into nourishment. A shriveled rind, back into the soil. Death, back into life. I’m trying to understand the crushing decay - of trust and kindness and sometimes love - that happens between you and me, or us and them. Maybe all this between us will transform into something new, something life-fulfilling and good. Why did I learn to sew? Financial necessity. : Growing up, it was actually less costly to make your own clothes than to buy them from the store (the Western garment industry hadn’t yet started to outsource work to underdeveloped countries). Lucky for us, my mom was a seamstress and by the time I was a teenager, I had learnt to cut cloth and sew it into anything I imagined. The only hitch was that I despised my homemade clothes. Throughout my teenage years, I longed to wear the store-bought clothes my friends wore. It was only in my 20s that I realized what a gift I had; to be able to design my clothes exactly how I wanted them, to make them so they would perfectly fit my petite frame and my smaller-than-size-A cups 🙄. And recently, I’ve realized that it’s also the perfect way to #saynotofastfashion .... that’s why I’m so happy to pass my knowledge on to my daughters (son is totally not interested 🙄) : Sewing is not for everyone but everyone can and should be a conscious consumer - buy secondhand, buy less, buy quality that lasts....
