Why did I learn to sew? Financial necessity. : Growing up, it was actually less costly to make your own clothes than to buy them from the store (the Western garment industry hadn’t yet started to outsource work to underdeveloped countries). Lucky for us, my mom was a seamstress and by the time I was a teenager, I had learnt to cut cloth and sew it into anything I imagined. The only hitch was that I despised my homemade clothes. Throughout my teenage years, I longed to wear the store-bought clothes my friends wore. It was only in my 20s that I realized what a gift I had; to be able to design my clothes exactly how I wanted them, to make them so they would perfectly fit my petite frame and my smaller-than-size-A cups 🙄. And recently, I’ve realized that it’s also the perfect way to #saynotofastfashion .... that’s why I’m so happy to pass my knowledge on to my daughters (son is totally not interested 🙄) : Sewing is not for everyone but everyone can and should be a conscious consumer - buy secondhand, buy less, buy quality that lasts.... Last November, while in Antigua, we visited Betty’s Hope, a former sugar plantation. As melancholy as that was, there was a glimmer of hope. We learnt that even when slavery was accepted as “normal” by much of the world, there were ordinary citizens around the globe who quietly revolted by simply buying sugar from elsewhere packaged in containers labeled with “Not Made by Slaves” to display on their tables. These were the early architects of ethical consumerism. Their “small” action did not change a day in the life of a slave but did play an important role in the abolition of slavery. All this to say, what we buy and sell DOES have an impact on the world. : Also, happy birthday to my amazing husband who made this pie a few weeks ago... If you haven’t already watched, I highly encourage you to see the movie, Seed: The Untold Story. : I’ve been thinking a lot about seeds lately as I harvest and store them away for next year’s garden. I come from generations of farmers and I’m a proud and passionate seed collector. It boggles my mind that we have allowed 94% of our seed varieties to disappear in the last century and that we allow chemical companies to control the majority of our seed supply. Wrapped up in our fight to save the environment is also the fight to free the basis of life from corporate greed.
