I’m no expert on the matter, but from my visits to India I’d bet that the mango lassi is the most popular variation of India’s favorite yogurt drink during the summer months. I suppose this is in part due to it being mango season during this time. Lucky for us, here in Canada, we get a healthy supply of mangoes from mango producing countries throughout the world.
I’ve already shared my recipes for the standard salty lassi, as well as the sweet rose lassi. So it’s time for a mango lassi recipe today along with a few variations. As with the other two lassi recipes that I’ve already shared, my mango lassi recipe also uses buttermilk. First of all, buttermilk carries many health benefits and a lassi is a good way to get buttermilk into your diet. Secondly, I find that here in North America, this is necessary to get an authentic Indian lassi taste as it spikes up the sour level. It seems that I’m not the only one to think this…. The Kitchn also agrees with me. However, unlike their advice to use boxed mango puree, I prefer to use fresh mangoes. Of course, keep in mind that not all mangoes are the same. You’ll need to choose a variety that is sweet and the least bit fibrous. Kent, Ataulfo and Alphonso are popular varieties that work well.
Surprisingly, the mango lassi is not a favorite among my children who prefer to eat mangoes as-is. And so, I make a few other variations using popular summer berries. Today, I’m using strawberries and blackberries but feel free to experiment with whichever type you prefer. Regardless of the fruit you use for flavouring, a lassi is the perfect, healthy drink for hot summer days!
Last little thing to keep in mind… these drinks also make for great popsicles! Just pour into molds, let freeze and enjoy!

Fruit Lassi Popsicles
Just pour into molds, let freeze and enjoy!
NOTE: Increase or decrease the amount of fruit to get the consistency you like, the amounts above are what I generally use. If using raspberries, you will also need to strain before serving to remove the seeds, as with blackberries.
Loved your recipe, your presentation…..all good 🙂
Thank you.
